Most animals get substances for energy, growth and development by digesting food inside their bodies. Bacteria, on the other hand, release digestive enzymes into their environments and then absorb digested food into their cells.
In humans, digestive enzymes turn the large molecules in our food into the smaller subunits they are made of which can be absorbed by the small intestine.
Complex carbohydrates and proteins are both polymers as they are made up of lots of smaller molecules or monomers.

Many reactions can be speeded up using a catalyst (chemicals which speed up a reaction).
Enzymes are biological catalysts that increase the rate of reactions in the body. They help to break substrates into products.
