The Chapel

The School Chapel is on the top floor of the Chapel Block in the St. Boniface building by the Music Department.

The Chapel is dedicated to St. Boniface. He was an eighth century Christian monk from Crediton in Devon who became a missionary in Germany, and is sometimes known as the ‘Apostle to Germany’. The dedication of the Chapel to St. Boniface dates from the days of St. Boniface College when the building was a college for training missionaries.

The Chapel is uncomplicated in its design with an elegant simplicity, which gives it a sense of space, peace and prayerfulness. It is available for all members of the School Community as a place set apart for prayer or quiet thought and reflection.

There is a simple, said service of Holy Communion each Friday lunchtime, in which all pupils and staff are welcome.

The Minster Church of St Denys

The Church of St Denys stands immediately adjacent to the School and is a thriving Parish Church of the Church of England serving part of the town of Warminster. There has been a Church on this site for hundreds of years. The present Church was extensively rebuilt in Victorian times.

Church and Chapel Attendance

All staff and pupils meet in St Denys’ Church twice a week to start the School day with worship and prayers. These assemblies are led by the Chaplain, who often gives the main talk.  The Headmaster also speaks regularly, but many of the talks are given by pupils as well as by members of staff.

The Church of St. Denys also serves the School for such significant annual services as Remembrance Day, the Christmas Carol Service and the Commemoration Service on Speech Day.

Boarders attend a service in the Chapel of St Boniface at 5.30pm every Sunday during term time. The service is about 25 minutes long with hymns, prayers, a Bible reading and a talk or presentation by the Chaplain or pupils.  Every boarding house is involved at least once each term.

For these Boarders’ Chapel services it is expected that pupils wear suitable clothing. No jeans are allowed, and pupils must wear collared shirts. Appropriate footwear must be worn, with no trainers or flip flops allowed.

The Prep School meets for an assembly each morning in the Prep School Hall.

School confirmation

The School offers preparation sessions each year for any pupils who are interested in being confirmed in the Church of England. Candidates from the School are usually confirmed by the Bishop of Salisbury at one of the diocesan confirmation services in Salisbury Cathedral.

It is not usual in the Church of England to confirm candidates younger than the age of 12 years, but further information about this and what confirmation entails is issued each year by the Chaplain.
