We are now going to review some things about covalent bonding and covalent compounds.

TASK 1:  Are we ready? Click here   www.youtube.com/watch?v=CCo1Ffn9_u8

Task 2:  To move from GCSE to A-level Chemistry, study the summary notes and then watch the videos below in sequence.

Task 3: Now go through the videos below - on your own or together with video conferencing.  The first one recaps shapes of orbitals.  REMEMBER,  ORBITALS NEED TO OVERLAP WITH EACH OTHER AND A SHARED PAIR OF ELECTRONS OCCUPIES THIS OVERLAPPED, COMBINED SHAPE ORBITAL .

Task 4:  From what you have read and seen, and from other research, write an account or draw a spider diagram/mind map about covalent bonding and covalent compounds.

Task 5:  Past paper practice:

  • Draw a dot-and-cross diagram to show the electronic structure of the compound tetrachloromethane (only the outer electrons need be shown).   2 marks
  • Draw a dot-and-cross diagram of a molecule of carbon dioxide. Show outer electrons only.   2 marks

(Edexcel GCSE Jun 2013, 5CH2H, Q2(iii))

TASK 6:  Now try question 1.1 below.  Try 2 as well if you want to.

TASK 7:  Draw diagrams to represent sigma and pi bonds in ethene.  The PowerPoint below may help you.
